Build or Buy as the Copilot Skills Marketplace Comes for Your Close Process

When Microsoft [introduced Skills to Copilot in Excel](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2026/06/25/copilot-in-excel-built-for-the-era-of-frontier-finance/) in June, it shipped a sample library and, more consequentially, a plan: partner-built Skills are arriving in Q3, distributed through the Microsoft Marketplace and the Microsoft 365 admin centre. [CFO Dive reported](https://www.cfodive.com/news/microsoft-boosts-copilot-excel-based-finance-workflows/823933/) an initial roster of partners including LSEG, Ramp, Rogo, Samaya AI, Velixo and Vena. In other words, the close process is about to have a shelf of off-the-shelf options, and every finance team will face the same question: build your own Skills, buy someone else's, or some of both.

The honest framing is not build versus buy. It is knowing which parts of your close are commodity and which parts are your edge. A generic month-end sequence, a standard variance walk, a boilerplate reconciliation, these are processes thousands of teams run almost identically, and there is little glory in hand-writing a Skill for work a vendor has already packaged and tested. If a marketplace Skill does the commodity step competently and saves you the maintenance, buying it is the rational move.

What you should be slow to outsource is the logic that is specific to how your entities actually close. The order in which a SPAC books accretion before its tax provision, the way a fund allocates pass-through costs across a fixed quarterly cap, the entity-by-entity quirks that make your reporting defensible, that is not commodity. It encodes judgement your firm has accumulated, and it is precisely the thing a boutique's clients pay for. A Skill that captures it is an asset; handing that asset to a generic vendor template flattens the very thing that differentiates you.

There is also a governance angle worth naming. A purchased Skill is a third party executing steps inside your workbook, so the same diligence you apply to any vendor applies here: understand what it does, review it before it touches a live book, and keep a record of which version ran. Convenience does not suspend the review.

At Cell Fusion Solutions Inc we help firms draw that line deliberately, buying the commodity Skills, building the proprietary ones, and keeping the close logic that is genuinely their moat inside the house. Let the marketplace take the boilerplate. Keep what makes your close yours.
