What Copilot Cowork Credits Actually Cost and How to Budget for an AI Teammate

For most of the last year Copilot Cowork was a free curiosity inside Microsoft's Frontier program. That ended on 16 June 2026, when Cowork [went generally available worldwide](https://www.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/blog/2026/06/17/copilot-cowork-is-now-generally-available/) and picked up a price tag. If your finance team has been quietly handing multi-step work to an AI teammate, the invoice is now real, and the first rule is the one most coverage buries: Cowork is off by default and bills separately from your seat, so nobody spends a cent until an admin deliberately turns it on.

The mechanics are worth understanding before you budget. Cowork sits on top of a standard Microsoft 365 Copilot licence and meters its work in a unit called a Copilot Credit, priced at one cent each under pay-as-you-go. What a task costs is not fixed. As [Microsoft's billing documentation](https://learn.microsoft.com/en-us/microsoft-365/copilot/usage-based-billing-overview-copilot-credits) explains, four things drive the number: which model runs the job, how much of your data it has to pull in and reason against, how many tools it calls, and how long it runs end to end. A quick one-step task is cheap; a long, multi-source, multi-output project that reasons across your whole mailbox is the expensive end. Microsoft groups tasks loosely into light, medium and heavy tiers, and a heavy one can run several dollars a pop.

The good news is that the guardrails are genuinely usable. The Cost Management dashboard in the Microsoft 365 admin centre lets you set hard spending caps at the tenant, group and individual level, wire up alerts before a threshold hits, and drill into consumption by user or service. There is also a Customer Cowork Estimator for modelling spend before you enable anything. My favourite trick is the simplest: after a task finishes, type `/cost` in the task window to see exactly how many credits it burned, then multiply by how often you would actually run it. That turns a guess into a budget line.

One deadline matters. Frontier tenants have a grace period, but usage-based billing must be configured by 1 July 2026 or Cowork stops for everyone until it is.
